Baby pronouns

Today (8 December 2013) Derin pointed at a photo of himself (the halloween one when he was about 6 months old) and said “me”.
This is very interesting for two reasons:

He recognises himself and knows that he is a person/thing that can be in photos.

He said “me”. Normally young babies will say “you” when they are referring to themselves because that is what they hear everyone else referring to them as.

Lemonade Scones

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups of self-raising flour
  • 1 Cup of double cream
  • 1 cup of lemonade

Method

  1. Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees celcius
  2. Put all the ingredients in a large bowl
  3. Stir enough for ingredients to be thoroughly mixed but no more than you have to to make the dough
  4. Sprinkle flour (self-raising or plain) on the bench to make an area where you can roll the dough
  5. Spread dough on the floured surface, and roll out to about 2 or 3 cm thick
    Prepare the baking tray where you will cook the scones by putting baking paper on it so the scones don’t stick
  6. Cut into scone-size pieces and place on the baking tray (make sure there is enough space around each scone for it to grow
  7. Put the tray in the oven for about 20 or 25 minutes

Eating

Fun fact: Traditionally scones are eaten with jam and cream. This works really well, but jam can be replaced with chocolate spread or honey. Banana also works well instead of, or as well as, cream.

Desiderata

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

Using similes

Recently Derin has made a new linguistic development.

A week ago Derin told me that the garage was a cave. Then 3-4 days ago he changed that. Now the garage is LIKE a cave.

A couple of days ago he also said that one of his toys was LIKE a tunnel (it was one of thoes spiral wire things to run beads along).

This seems to be an important linguistic/logical distinction that he is now making.
